Vestry to Parish

Holy Cross Church

Vestry to Parish

Sunday, March 6, 2016

The Vestry is managing the affairs of Holy Cross, and during this transitional period is engaged with the Bishop and Diocesan staff, and following up on its commitments to the parish.

While the Vestry strives to not only meet, but exceed the expectations of the congregation and the Diocese, there are some overarching comments that must be stressed and we want you to understand the following:

  • The Vestry is fully engaged; BUT WE NEED YOU!!!  We are asking for your active participation, including committee work (and each member of the vestry is assigned to one or more committees to ascertain full alignment).  This is an “all-hands on deck” scenario.  Everything we do, must be prayerful, and be guided by the Holy Spirit.

  • We welcome back any of our members who have left (or have been away for any reason).  We hope you feel at home as before and you will join our work to restore all people to unity with God and each other in Christ.

Priorities have been mapped for the following topics:

  • Worship

  • Budget

  • Operations

  • Communication (both with the Congregation and the Diocese to achieve the highest level of     transparency.

To accomplish these priorities, we have reviewed the committees of the Vestry, and added a new one.  Any of you who is willing and able to participate on one of these committees, please reach out to any member of the Vestry; the harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few.

  1. The Executive Committee – led by the Sr. Warden

  2. Finance and Budget Committee – led by Larry Hunt

  3. The Media and Communications Committee – led by Karen Williams.    This committee will include all media outlets:  Cross Current, the parish website, “Let’s Talk” sessions, Vestry discussions (like this one), etc

  4. Buildings, Ground & Operations Committee – led by the Jr. Warden.   This committee will focus on Church Operations and the physical infrastructure (i.e. facility use and maintenance)

  5. The Worship Committee will be led by the Sr. Warden

  6. The Education Committee is led by Michelle Ware

  7. Outreach and Fellowship Committee – led by Vestry members Paula Murray-Kreuger

  8. Evelia Hinds will lead the Stewardship Committee (Ministry), which will be expanded to a year-round initiative, to support our efforts (and) to ensure that stewardship is as meaningful as it needs to be, with respect to time, talent, and treasure

  9. Nominating Committee will be comprised by the members of the Vestry who will rotate off in January, 2017 - Jennifer Friday, Willard Fey, Bevily Willabus, and Paula Murray-Kreuger

  10. A Governance Committee has been added to review our Vestry By-Laws - which will be coordinated by Melanie Wilson

We are committed to approving the 2016 Holy Cross Budget by mid-March, but acknowledge more work to be done:

  1. More review on specific items is needed, and will be done by the Finance and Budget Committee

  2. We are working toward having a balanced budget (where income = expenses)

  3. In order to have a balanced budget, Holy Cross needs to rethink our pledges

    1. We are asking that all of our parishioners who have pledged, prayerfully consider increasing your pledge.  There are more scriptural references about tithing than we can mention, especially with respect to honoring the Lord with your first fruit (Prov. 3:9-10) or giving 10% of their “first fruits”

    2. There is always the opportunity to change your pledge if your circumstances change

    3. We are asking those of us who have not pledged, please do so.  Pledges are our largest source of income and they are used to determine how we plan our mission and ministry, especially during this period of transition; it is an indicator of our financial viability. This will be used by the Diocese as well as lending institutions as they consider our ability to call our next Rector or refinance our debt

    4. Those who have contributed consistently, but have not made an official pledge, please do so, even if it has to be a “goal” instead of a “commitment”, we welcome your involvement

    5. Those who think that their contribution is too small to pledge, think again.  There is no pledge too small

    6. Last and most importantly, PLEASE HONOR YOUR COMMITMENTS.  You are a vital part of the ministry, here at Holy Cross

Where do you see yourself in this plan?  We said that your active participation is needed.  Each of us has unique skills and the help is needed from all of us.  Again, the harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few.

We ask for your continued prayers and commitment.

The Vestry has committed to meeting twice a month on the Third Tuesday (traditional meeting time) at 7:00 PM and the First Sunday, 9:30 AM, between services (new schedule). The congregation is welcome to observe the proceedings.
